Mark's Story

For a while, I refused to believe that I was losing my hair. It thinned steadily over 5 years until one day I looked in the mirror and finally admitted to myself that I was going bald. I was in shock for a while, no one in my family was bald. Except for one uncle, and later I found out, my great grandfather.

For a couple of months, I bounced between acceptance and denial. I really didn’t want to accept it. As I watched small clumps of hair circle the shower drain, I told myself “everyone’s hair does that”.

Some years prior, someone had asked me what my favourite part of my body was. I replied “my hair!” It was long, wavy, dark, and thick; a signature feature; it gave me a distinctive look. Now it was falling out.

For some, experiencing hair loss can be akin to a grieving process. Something you love that has been with you your entire life is leaving you, never to return. I grieved my loss for a few months, and then decided I needed to move on. I bought a razor on the way home from work and shaved it all off.

For about a year, I had a buzz cut, shaving my hair down every 2-3 days. I was OK with it. I began to move on and forget about my hair, but I was never quite as happy or confident as when I had my proud wavy locks.

Then, in a serendipitous conversation, someone recommended a hair loss specialist called Tracey and suggested I look into hair replacement systems. Intrigued, I called Tracey, and she invited me to her studio. She listened to my story over a cup of tea and then talked me through hair replacement. I couldn’t believe it, the hair systems looked so realistic!

I decided to order one and returned later to have it fitted. When I looked in the mirror afterwards, all I could do was smile. My thick, dark, wavy locks were back. And so was my confidence.
